2009 Knitting Review!

I thought I would recap my knitting accomplishments for 2009!!!

Here they are in order and the awards (Officially given by the Knitting Duck foundation) they recieved

1. Phiaro - Gets the award for Most Used. I wear this thing ALL THE TIME! I love love love this scarf and would probably never knit this again. Hello endless stockinet

2 & 3. Noro Stripped Scarf and Noro Striped Scarf II- gets the award for most addictive knit. I NEVER knit two of something... there are too many other things I want to knit to knit something twice!

4. Happy Birdie - gets the award for "Awwwww"! So cute! and all the seaming is well worth it!

5. Roaming Hat - gets the award for recycling as the yarn came from someone else's de-stash. Bonus!

6. Twirly Skirt - gets the award for stash busting as this was all made from leftovers from the pinwheel sweater! LOVE!

7. Party Hat - gets the award for fun! This was fun to knit and I know my niece has loads of fun wearing it

8. Roses - gets the award for most loved. I know my mom loves having these roses that never wilt... in fact if they get a little dusty you can just throw them in the washer dryer!

9. Roar! - gets the award for scariest hat! Any kid that puts this on automatically feels like a real dinosaur!

10. Orange Hat - This hat gets the award for brightest knit. You can spot this hat from miles away. It came out fabulously and I know the recipient loves it

11. First Socks! - Gets the award for being MY FIRST SOCKS!! and I love them for that.

12. Monsters! - These two get the award for cutest recipient - The little guy I made these two for is SO cute! His cuteness outdoes the cuteness of these monsters exponentially!

13. Bath Blanket - the blanket gets the award for most creative. I know it looks to be one of my simplest knits of all year but I knit it with out a pattern and on the diagonal. So, for me, it was really creative to think up what I wanted and make it happen. Oh and this blanket also went to Mr. Cutie Cute from the above award.

14. Knotted Hat - this hat gets the award for team work. My mom picked the yarn then I found the pattern and then we drove all over portland trying to find the pattern as it could only be bought in hard copy. But our persistence paid off and a week later mom had a hat!

15. Swollowtail Shawl - definitely gets the award for biggest accomplishment. I dyed the yarn and then knit it into this beautiful shawl. My first lace shawl ever! Really loved the way it came out with the pattern and the colors. score!

16. February Lady Sweater - this sweater gets the award for longest. knit. ever. I started this on February 1st 2009 and finished it October 23rd! 9 months! It wouldn't have taken so long if I hadn't put it down for 6 of those months or had to knit most of it twice but oh well... I took my time but still got it done. and I love wearing it!

17. Husband's Socks! - These get the award for endless cables! ugh those one stitch mock cables never ceased to mock me with their neverendingness!

18. Silky Ruffles - gets the award for perfect project for the yarn... I searched hi and lo of a project that would do this georgous yarn justice and didn't find it until I found the pattern for Just enough ruffles. LOVE!

yeesh 18 projects and total skeins used was 26!!! Seeing as my new years resolution last Jan 1st was to have 10 Fo's I would say that I more than accomplished that! Score one for lindsay!

My second new years resolution last year was to make something for me. I accomplished this too in a big way because the FLS, Phiaro, First socks, Noro Striped Scarf II and Silky Ruffles are all for lil' ol' me!!!!

This year I also started dyeing yarn and learned that I really enjoy it. I am hoping to get some more dyeing time in 20-10

But overall I'm quite happy with my progress for 2009 but I know that next year will be even better!

My goals for 20-10 (knitting wise at least) are:

- Knit with some of my dyed yarn
- No yarn buying until at least June!
- Finish the cabled purse I started ages ago
- Make a second sweater for my self (I'm looking at wisteria)
- Complete 19 FO's!

FO: Phiaro

I finally finished the Phiaro.... (insert happy dance here). I know you have been seeing it on my WIP (work in progress) list for a long time but now I can finally announce that it is FINISHED! Done. Finito. Khalas.

Here's princess doing a Vana for you...

Honestly I'm so happy with the way it came out! Perfect drape, perfect color and just for me!
So here are the details

Pattern: Phiaro Scarf from Interweave
Yarn: Wendy Pure 100% Bamboo
Mods: I decided to take one repeat out to make it slightly shorter. Also I twisted the first and last stitch of each set of remaining stitches to give them more structure when I dropped the rest. I also purled all the dropped stitches so that I would remember better when to twist. For the CO I decided not to break the yarn 8 gajillion time because I didn't want to weave in the ends. Instead I cast off 5 looping the ball through the last stitches then K 5 repeating until done leaving me with just the live stitches to drop. If you need clarification feel free to contact me. Finally the scarf is 14 inches wide instead of the 22 inches the pattern calls for... I'm really happy with the end result. Big cheesy grin for this one

WANTED: More knitting time

This whole work thing I have going on from 8-6 five days a week is really eating in to my knitting time. Seriously, how much knitting can I get done in an hour or two a night!?! It's just not possible to knit as much as I want to.

The result of this lack of knit time is that I work on only one of my WIPs at a time leaving the less exciting ones to sit and wait patiently for their turn. Case in point. My noro striped scarf is getting ALL the attention right now while my cable purse, phiaro and (cough) textured tunic sit to the side, watching me, taunting me even with their little you-have-done-NOTHING-for-me-in-a-week attitudes. "Ha!" I say back. "I have NO knitting time and I will work on the instant gratification project if I want to. But in the mean time please don't hate me. You're special too and I'll get to you... later"

I wonder if people take vacation time so that they can catch up on knitting projects?

WIPs!

I have three (kinda) Works In Progress at the moment. I don't know how I got to three. Really that's unlike me because I hardly ever have more that two projects that I am working on at a time. But because one is off the needles I suppose that it doesn't count. kinda.

The first one I cast on was a Drops Design Cable Bag. I loved the simplicity of it and could actually picture my self carrying it around so I got the yarn quite a while ago but finally cast on for it last week. I'm telling you Cascade Lana Grande + size 8's = HARD. Not to mention that I needed to increase from 88 stitches to 220! That was just insane. But well worth it. Anyhow I have done two cable repeats so far and I'm really happy with the way it's coming out.

Then yesterday I cast on for the Noro Striped scarf. I know a million people have made this scarf but I just couldn't resist. I love the way it looks with the color changing stripes. The bright colors are fantastic!

Then of course there is the Phiaro. I finally undid all the stitches and wow, that took way longer than I thought it would. I mean you drop a stitch when you are knitting and it seems to slither four or five rows down before you can catch it but when you give them permission to undo them selves they seem to hold on to their spots with all their strength! Anyhow I dropped the stitches and cut carefully down the center and now I'm in the middle of the braiding faze. I have one size done but still have all of side 2 left. sigh. But I won't give up! I have come too far to give up now!!

I'm hoping at the BIG Dubai / Abu Dhabi meeting at the end of the month that I will have some FO's to show off. Fingers crossed.

Aching for a Phiaro

I'm so close to being done with my Phiaro and it feels so good.

But I'm having some problems with the next step.

See? After knitting eight gajillion rounds on the Phiaro, I have bound off all the stitches that will stay and left the stitches that I will drop. The problem is I just can't drop them.
There are 107 stitches to drop. 107. and that's just around the top that's not counting the entire column of stitches that makes each of those 107! So much work. Hours of work. Rounds and rounds of work and I'm going to willingly undo it for the good of the project. If I had not seen Charmaine's Phiaro in person I may have decided that it wasn't worth the risk to undo more than half of what I spent hours knitting. But it is worth it. Now I just need to get up the nerve to :::gulp::: undo it!

Don't worry I'll post the end results.

Meanwhile:

Jerry and Princess have been chasing and attacking each other all over the house while I have been knitting the final rounds on the Phiaro and going through drop-stitch turmoil. But they sure have been having fun and look cute doing it!

Lovely weekend indeed

I had a fantastic weekend! It started on thuresday with my husband and I having dinner at Mall of The Emirates in Dubai. I had tabbouleh and rice from Beirut and he had a salad. So sensible.

Then yesterday (Friday), I met up with Sydney for lunch at Biella in Marina Mall (that's in Abu Dhabi in case you were trying to figure out if the new Marina Mall in Dubai is open yet, it isn't). After a wonderful pesto we wandered around the mall then headed to Caribou Coffee to meet up with our fellow U-Knitted Amiras as it was time for our regular meeting once again! Most everyone showed up and Sydney even had her first FO!!!!
I have a pic but I'm going to send it to her because I really think she should be the one to show the world her first FO... then up load it on to ravelry so that we can all favorite it!

Today I went to the Green Branch (our local LYS I suppose) although I didn't head over there for knitting needs rather I needed some painting supplies... but of course I got in to downtown Abu Dhabi at like 2:30 and the Green Branch doesn't open until 4:30! So I headed over to Starbucks for some coffee and PDK (public display of knitting) in case I hadn't gotten enough coffee and knitting yesterday ; )

I just sat and watched the world go by as I worked diligently on my Phiaro Scarf. Every once and a while a passer-by would look inside and see me knitting and usually, well, stare until they almost ran into something or ran out of window to stare through. hehehe. it was a lot of fun. two guys were about to sit in the two seats in front of me but when one of them saw me he said "lets sit up stairs I don't want to block her view." isn't that nice! I really appreciated that cause I gotta look somewhere while I am knitting and it would have been just plain awkward to stare at them the whole time.

So now I'm laying in bed working on the finishing for the Back to School Vest (after a pep talk from Kundi yesterday, thanks Kundi!) while we get carpet installed in the living room. YAY! I'm very excited. no more unfinished floors!! I'll take pics and show you the house now that it's "presentable".

I hope you had a great weekend too... have a lovely week!

help! WIP confusion!

so i was all excited to give you project updates on my two WIPs and now i'm worried i have messed up on one... uuuggghhh

but first let me you tell you about the phiaro which is coming along slowly but surly. it's great to work on while i'm in the car (a passenger of course) or while i'm watching a movie and want something more mindless (i.e. headache-less) and well, endless.

here's the updated picture.... i'm not sure it actually looks longer than the last pic but it is. and i feel i work on it a lot so you get a pic anyways.

now for the help.... here is the Back to School Vest. see? i have made a lot of progress from when you last heard me talk about it here. and now it looks like this!

yup the front is all done!

look at that waffle stitch.... i'm really happy with the way it looks and it's so easy to do!

but the back. the back is where all the problems are.... the pattern said decrease one at the end of the next 7 rows. which i did. and then i started knitting on to get the 6.5 inches of length the pattern calls for. but about 5 (cough10cough) rows into the even rows i had a flash back to the baby cardi! 7 really means 14 doesn't it! aakk is 7 decreases RS and 7 WS.

dang. i think i just answered my own question! it's really decrease one at the end of the next 14 rows isn't it? :::sigh::: and i just counted my stitches and i have too many. uuugghhh! why didn't i check earlier!!! oh well i guess i have some ripping to do. at least i didn't get too much further, like to the end and sitting there confused as to why i have too many stitches. however i have heard the back comes in a bit narrow so maybe i shouldn't do all 14... although i'm not sure i could figure out how to fix it from there to match the front. no i think i'll just stick to the pattern.
